About Le Casse-Noix Moderne - The Modern Nutcracker
In 2008, composer and arranger Mike Gagliardo and choreographer Linze Rickles McRae began talking about collaborating for a performance of "The Nutcracker" with their respective organizations, the Etowah Youth Orchestras and the Downtown Dance Conservatory. Gagliardo and McRae agreed on one thing - that this version of the famous holiday classic should be like no other.
At first the talk was of a "rock and roll Nutcracker," in the style of the music of the Trans-Siberian Orchestra. However, the project soon morphed into something bigger - a new take on the show that would encompass every form of popular music from the 1920's to the present time. Gagliardo and McRae selected a representative portion of the music from the original work, maintaining the integrity of the original show while creating a production that would be both audience- and performer-friendly.
From there, each selection became a different style. "Trepak" turned into a hard-swinging big band number, a la Buddy Rich. "Sugar Plum Fairy" became a soulful ballad straight out of Memphis and Stax Records. The Overture turned into straight-ahead rock and roll. "Mirlitons" tuned into western swing. And just like that, "Le Casse-noix Moderne" was born - a retrospective of modern music and dance, with all of the magic and familiarity of the timeless holiday classic!

Bluegrass represents one of the most American, down home, traditions of American musical culture. From Bill Monroe to the Steep Canyon Rangers, bluegrass has been a staple of our culture.Through this project, we aim to preserve these grand traditions and bring about a new work focused on introducing new audiences to the bluegrass choral world and beyond. Following the acclaimed success of The World Beloved: A Bluegrass Mass, dynamic duo Chamberlain and Barnett are teaming up again to bring you a follow up masterwork- Mortals & Angels: A Bluegrass Te Deum.
Partially commissioned by DCINY, this work will receive its World Premiere at Carnegie Hall on January 25, 2016. Featuring a classical chorus of 300 voices including a treble choir, this new work aims to employ the traditional bluegrass style within the context of classical structure. The text will include direct passages from ancient scripture and contemporary prayer.
The DCINY Premiere Project would like to thank the following Official Kickstarter supporters for their help in making this project become a reality.

New York Concert Review Inc.
Highlights from the Review by Frank Daykin
If Thursday’s concert of high-school age chamber musicians is any indication, the state of classical chamber music is very healthy in Southern California (and, I hope, elsewhere!). A large array of dedicated students, all excellently coached, performed a wide variety of repertoire with skill ranging from good to very good to “wow.”
For me, the two “wow” moments occurred in the last two works on the program. First, an astonishingly mature string quartet who performed the first movement of Grieg’s rarely heard String Quartet in G minor, Op. 27. The players (Jason Corbin, Alisa Luera, David Noble, and Jonathan Kim) created a fierce, plush, ensemble sound that would be the envy of many a mature professional group; they breathed and phrased perfectly together; and they managed to make Grieg’s somewhat rambling structure sound inevitable and musically coherent and compelling.
The other “wow” moment was provided by a piano four-hand team playing the duet transcription of Ravel’s La Valse made by Ravel’s friend Lucien Garban. This team (Nicholas Mendez and Yoko Rosenbaum) played with all the flair and assurance of a professional piano duo, fabulously unified. Their comprehension of this difficult score was superb; the only quality lacking was a bit more freedom and Viennese upbeat. Nevertheless, a definite “wow.”
Other highlights included: a fleet, precise rendition of the final movement of Beethoven’s First Piano Trio; cellist William Ellzey’s excellent communication skill in the first movement of Brahms’ Trio for Clarinet, Cello and Piano; Martinů’s Sonata for Flute, Violin and Piano; the first movement of Schoenfield’s Café Music; Raymond Newell’s cello in the Brahms Second Cello Sonata.
Sometimes the age of the participants showed an inability to inhabit fully the emotional message of the selected repertoire. However, the fact that they are playing such difficult material with technical fluency is in itself a thing to behold (and support).
I wish I had had these opportunities when I was a young student. I salute you all, and your fine teachers, coaches, and schools.

Special Q&A at the top of Act 2 with WQXR Radio Host Jeff Spurgeon!
Sing! The Music was Given was commissioned by DCINY to mark the occasion of the organisation’s 10th anniversary in 2018. The co-founders, Jonathan Griffith and Iris Derke, have been hugely supportive of my music over these ten years, and a programme of my works has been performed on or around every Martin Luther King Jr. holiday since the inaugural concert.
To celebrate the anniversary, I decided to go to the core of what DCINY is, their raison d’être: music and singing. I therefore selected or commissioned text that was about music. The words ‘Sing – sing – Music was given’ are an exhortation from me to them to sing the music I have given, while forming the opening line of the rousing first movement, a setting of the poem by Thomas Moore (1779–1852).
There follow two movements with text by Carol Barratt (aka Lady Jenkins!) who has contributed a great deal of text to my work over the years. The first is structured in the form of an acrostic poem, where the first letter of each line spells another word, in this instance ‘M-U-S-I-C’.
The second with text by Carol is ‘Music Matters!’, which can be read in two ways: the fact that music is important but also that this movement presents facts about, and facets of, music. For example counter-melodies: do, re, me together with hand signals, and taa, taa-tay, ta-fa-te-fee (French rhythm names). Also ‘music counts’, both in the sense that it is important but also in terms of pulse: 1-2-3-4, 2-2-3-4 etc.
‘Waterfall Music’ has haiku text dating from 1688 by Bashō Matsuo and is sung in both Japanese and English.
The fifth movement, ‘That Music Always Round Me’, sets words by Walt Whitman (1819–1892), a vivid text pointedly highlighted in the orchestration.
An option available for performances of this work is to include at this point two movements borrowed from my Gloria, also a celebration of music. The first is a setting of ‘Tehillim – Psalm 150’ (sung in Latin or Hebrew), followed by ‘I’ll Make Music’, with text from Deuteronomy 32:2, Psalm 144:9 and 1 Chronicles 13:8.
The work ends with a movement in Adiemus ‘tribal’ style and quasi-African feel. The text is based on the deconstruction of two Zulu words, ukukula (sing) umcolo (music). The opening movement is referenced before the tribal feel resumes, bringing the work to a jubilant close.

On January 17, 2018 the Astana Ballet Theater will present the program Kazakhstan Astana Ballet Gala at the Lincoln Center, one of the world’s famous cultural venues. The performance of choreographic art of various genres is part of Modern Kazakhstan Culture in the Global World, a project of the Republic of Kazakhstan Ministry of Culture and Sports
It is also with this performance in New York that The Astana Ballet will launch a series of cultural events to commemorate the capital’s 20th anniversary, El Zhuregi – Astana. In the course of these years the capital has become an important center of socio-political and cultural life not only for the people inhabiting Kazakhstan but the entire Central Asian Region as well: the city has turned into an international hub in all of Eurasia.
The Astana Ballet will present spectators with an authentic, well-contrasted program which introduces both national culture and pieces reflecting the influence of the world ballet art. Significantly, it is New York, a multicultural city, that hosts the presentation of the Kazakh choreographic heritage and contemporary ballet performances by the theater's troupe.
“The task that the troupe of the theater has to tackle is not an easy one – to attract the attention of the public to our culture, to display the best samples of national and modern ballet art of Kazakhstan”, says Valeriy Kuzembaev, the theater director.
The Astana Ballet’s signature approach to performing has been achieved by merging the richness of classical heritage and modern ballet art, which has enabled augmenting the national dance and taking it to the big stage and on to being introduced to the entire world. The Astana Ballet attaches great significance to studying and modern rethinking of the Kazakh national dance as well as creating new choreographic miniatures to reveal its harmony in movement and beauty. What decisively defines the nature of the folk dance is the reflection of its root qualities and innate force as it is through the national dance that the audience gets to know and appreciate our culture. For this reason, Kazakh national dances are part and parcel of any tour program, having become the theater’s signature performance.
The Astana Ballet Gala program includes choreographic miniatures from Legacy of the Great Steppe: Arular, Ak-kyz, and Asem Konyr, which impress deeply due to their distinctive music and unique artistic imagery (choreographers: Mukaram Avakhri and Aigul Tati, both Honored Workers of Kazakhstan).
The spectators will also see a classical version of the Adagio from the Nutcracker, performed to Tchaikovsky’s eternal music, (choreography by Vasiliy Vainonen); a neoclassical duet from Love Fear Loss, a ballet set to the music based on songs of Edith Piaf; and scenes from the one-act ballet A Fuego Lento (choreography by R. Amarante).
A diverse and extraordinary repertoire coupled with a high performing and staging quality is the reasons Astana Ballet Theater has enjoyed continued success not just in its home country but far beyond its borders as well. As to the choreographic miniatures, critics around the world point out their freshness of interpretation along with faithful adherence to traditional ideas, richness of emotional palette and a flawless sense of style.
The Astana Ballet Theater has had the privilege to perform its programs on world-famous theatrical stages in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Beijing, Paris, Vienna, Seoul, Budapest, Baku, Minsk, New York, Tokyo, Warsaw and Brussels.
