Since
1986, Susan LeMaster has served as a vocalist with jazz groups and church
choirs, including five years with Ainsworth United Church of Christ and six
years at First Unitarian Universalist Church. A former student of Tom Blaylock
and Mark Bosnian, she studies with Joan Szymko at First Church in Portland. As
a Music & Arts Committee member of the Unitarian Church, she works on developing
music education and special community projects.
Collaboratively,
she has developed "Journey Into the Joys of Making Sound," based on Bobby
McFerrin's concept of "spontaneous inventions," with Suzi Stern-Luna. She also
helped Jonathan Griffith develop and introduce the "Music Mastery Series," a
three-part series designed to help singers sharpen their rhythm, sight reading,
and performance skills.
Ms.
LeMaster she has maintained a solo career as a jazz vocalist, performing in
Portland's key venues. She has sung major choral works under the direction of
Mark Slegers and Joan Szymko of the Aurora Chorus and appeared as a featured
soloist for the big bands, Pork Pie and Jazz Express.
A
co-founder of Northwest Artists Management, she helped to develop "Sentimental
Journey,"a program featuring Oregon's Poet Laureate, Lawson Inada. She also works
with Reverend Elbert Mondaine and his church, Celebration Tabernacle, in
offering Gospel services to the community and beyond.
