Classical Rock Star Set to Premiere His Cutting-Edge Musical at New York's Carnegie Hall
|
Distinguished Concerts International New York is proud to announce the New York Premiere of the concert version of American composer and choral idol Eric Whitacre's award-winning musical, Paradise Lost: Shadows and Wings, at Carnegie Hall on June 15, 2010. The concert version of Paradise Lost: Shadows and Wings combines trance, ambient and techno electronic with choral, cinematic, and operatic traditions. Grammy Award-winning soprano, Hila Plitmann, will sing the lead role of the angel Extasis, and Whitacre himself will be conducting, complete with taiko drummers, electronic playback, and a supporting onstage choir. DCINY is looking for choral ensembles of exceptional quality to comprise the onstage chorus.
Whitacre is one of the most performed choral music composers of his
generation, and is celebrated as a "classical rock star." In July and
August 2007, he premiered Paradise Lost: Shadows and Wings at the
Theatre at Boston Court in Pasadena, California to sold-out audiences,
replete with full cast, taiko drums, DJ, anime, and flying rigs.
Whitacre's California performances earned him numerous prestigious
awards such as the Richard Rodgers Award for most promising musical
theatre composer. The musical additionally met with 10 nominations at
the 2007 Los Angeles Stage Alliance Ovation Awards, including one for
Best World Premiere Musical.

Announcement Stirs Excitement for Musical Theater Lovers
|
In late August 2009, Whitacre announced his desire to showcase the work to East Coast audiences and premiere the concert version of it the summer of 2010 at New York's legendary Carnegie Hall. "We could not be more thrilled," says DCINY General Director, Iris Derke. "Eric's reputation as a contemporary composer of the highest caliber, as well as his popularity with the iPod Generation, is well-established. Based on the huge success of Paradise Lost in the Los Angeles area, we at DCINY already anticipate a sold-out performance here in New York. There isn't another city in the world that embraces musical theater as New York does, and I can't think of a better venue for this highly innovative work than the warmth and prestige of Carnegie Hall."
