Celebrating the Music of Wales Distinguished Concerts International New York (DCINY) presents a concert featuring the music of renowned Welsh composers Karl Jenkins and Arwel Hughes at the Stern Auditorium/Perelman Stage at Carnegie Hall on Saturday, March 6, 2010 at 8:00 pm. The event coincides with Wales Week USA, presented in association with the Welsh Assembly Government. Euphonium soloist David Childs will be travelling from Wales to perform the US Premiere of Jenkins' Euphonium Concerto, having been described by The Observer as "a great ambassador for the euphonium, possessing an astonishing technique and an engaging stage presence."
More on Karl Jenkins' Musical Selections

DCINY Guest Conductor and Composer Karl Jenkins, of West Glamorgan, Wales, will be conducting three of his own works. He will present the US Premiere of his Euphonium Concerto, which is to be performed by the soloist for whom it was written, David Childs. Jenkins comments on composing the work: "It's been a privilege to write a concerto for such a virtuoso performer. I've known David for a few years and was hoping this opportunity would happen. As is my wont, I've endeavored to make the concerto somewhat quirky and 'off the wall'." More about the concerto's World Premiere in Wales can be found at www.boosey.com.

The evening also includes Jenkins' Palladio, which is the first movement of a compilation of various works entitled Diamond Music. Palladio's theme is based on perhaps his most-heard classical piece in advertising, the theme used by De Beers diamond merchants for their successful jewelry campaign. Maestro Jenkins will also lead selections from his work Sacred Songs, which is a choral suite drawn from Jenkins' most popular works. Specific movements for this performance include Ave Verum from Stabat Mater and Benedictus from The Armed Man.

More on Hughes' Dewi Sant DCINY Principal Conductor Dr. Jonathan Griffith will also be at the podium conducting Arwel Hughes' Dewi Sant. Hughes was born in North Wales, and his musical talent gained him admission to the Royal College of Music as a composition student, and he eventually became Head of Music at BBC Wales. This never left much time for composition, but he was always generous in promoting the music of his Welsh contemporaries. The oratorio Dewi Sant was his first large-scale work of its kind and was commissioned by the Arts Council of Great Britain as part of the Welsh contributions to the Festival of Britain in 1951. He appropriately selected the patron saint of Wales as his subject. The work is modern, yet cast in a traditional mold. Hughes' music is colorful in harmony, while maintaining a lyrical and contemplative tone. This work serves as an appropriate conclusion to the celebration of the music and culture of Wales from a decorated native son.
Contributing Performers Participating choirs include the Pennsbury High School Concert Choir and The Pennsbury Community Chorus. Soloists for the performance include Susan Holsonbake, soprano, Timothy Birt, tenor, Mark Womack, baritone and David Childs, euphonium.
