A Concert Celebrating a Complex and Emotional Story
Distinguished Concerts International New York (DCINY) presents an evening of moving music, describing the journey of the African-American people, in The Allen Room at Jazz at Lincoln Center on Friday, June 18, 2010 at 8:00 pm. Darcy Reese leads members of the Lincoln High School Choir and the Twin Cities Gospel Choir and Jazz Band. The program also features gospel singer Robert Robinson.
More on the Performance
The audience experiences a journey of strength, persecution, tribulation, and finally celebration through the evening's performance. Singers, dancers, and drummers begin the story in Africa. From there, the tale continues to a strange land of uncertainty where life has been dramatically changed. Throughout the performance, the drum weaves the voice of the people and beautiful words and harmonies bring the listeners through each new era. African songs, spirituals, freedom songs, civil rights songs, jazz, and finally gospel songs are all woven throughout this beautiful journey of hope and strength.
Darcy Reese's Bio Darcy Reese has just completed her 23rd year as director of the Lincoln High School Choir. Under her guidance the choir program has grown to be very strong with over 170 singers from 9th-12th grade. Her students have performed in various venues across the United States including California, Virginia, Minnesota, Florida, and New York. Her choir is most noted for their unique and diverse cultural shows. The choirs have worked with professional artists from Amherst Massachusetts, New York City, Boston, Red Lake Indian Reservation, Oklahoma City, and Minneapolis/St. Paul.
Robert Robinson's Bio Robert Robinson began singing in church with his family at the age of 6 as part of the Robinson Children, and was directing the church choir by 15. He eventually started a gospel choir at Minneapolis Community College in 1990 and soon began to lead the 100-strong Twin Cities Community Gospel Choir, today heralded by Minnesota Monthly Magazine as "the state's most decorated group." 1991 brought Robert a featured role in "Nightingale" at the world-renowned Theatre de la Jeune Lune. In 1992, Robert took part for the first time in Lorie Line's Christmas tour and remained for 15 years with subsequent appearances on PBS and in Target stores nationwide.
