Ten finalists selected for competition recital

Distinguished Concerts International New York (DCINY) and the New York Opera Studio (NYOS) announce the finalists for the inaugural year of the Nico Castel International Master Singer Competition. A competition like no other in New York City, the Master Singer Competition rewards excellent vocal technique and artistry in opera and oratorio in singers 40 years old and under. The ten finalists, chosen from an outstanding pool of applicants, will compete in a live performance at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall on Saturday, February 19, 2011, President's Day Weekend, at 8:30 pm. After the concert one female and one male winner will be named the 2010 Nico Castel International Master Singers.

DCINY and NYOS have assembled a prestigious panel to judge the final competition: Nico Castel, NYOS Artistic Director; Jonathan Griffith, DCINY Artistic Director and Principal Conductor; Bob Chilcott, internationally-acclaimed composer, conductor, and former King's singer; Joan Dornemann, Assistant Conductor, Metropolitan Opera; and internationally-renowned singers Paul Plishka and Barbara Conrad.

The competition founders seek to aid emerging talents as they establish their careers. Says Nico Castel, "My career was launched when I won the Joy in Singing Competition in 1958. I know first hand how important such an opportunity is."

Each winner will receive a full scholarship to the New York Opera Studio Summer Intensive Program for Singers 2011, as well as a soloist role on the 2012 DCINY Concert Season.
The female finalists are Lisa Algozzini (Irvine, CA), Maria Elena Armijo (Brooklyn, NY), Eileen Mackintosh (Port Jervis, NY), Holly Sorensen (Salt Lake City, UT), and Perri Sussman (New York, NY). Male finalists are Cody Austin (Voorhees, NJ), John Kaneklides (Charlotte, NC) Steven L. Nanni (Binghamton, NY), Nicholas Tamagna (New York, NY), and Kreshnik Zhabjaku (Bronx, NY).

Says finalist Lisa Algozzini, "Nico Castel is an icon in the opera world so I am truly honored to be a part of the finals for this competition!"
