Eric Whitacre, the creator of the groundbreaking Virtual Choir, leads a live concert showcasing top young vocal talent from 10 choirs around the country. This concert is the brainchild of Iris Derke and Jonathan Griffith of Distinguished Concerts International New York (DCINY) whose mission is to present heart stopping innovative choral music at prestigious venues across the world.

New York City's PS22 Staten Island choir has just joined the event at the personal invitation of Eric Whitacre. Fresh from their Oscar show performance, the PS22 choir has been making waves with unique renditions of pop tunes, standards and original compositions. The group of 65 fifth graders won the 2010 Webby Award for Artist of the Year, and has performed with everyone from Katy Perry to Passion Pit to Tori Amos. Their director Gregg Breinberg says, "kids have stuff they need to express and get out and chorus is the best form for that." The choir's appearances on programs such as Nightline, Good Morning America and Oprah have brought more light to art education, and their talent brings them to Avery Fisher Hall to open the concert with their own music.

Eric Whitacre is the acclaimed composer and conductor behind such works as the groundbreaking electro-musical Paradise Lost: Shadows and Wings, the Pirates of the Caribbean IV score with Hans Zimmer and an internet choir selected from over two thousand voices from dozens countries. His sheet music sales rival the likes of Bon Jovi, Bach and the Beatles.

DCINY Co-Founder and Artistic Director Jonathan Griffith describes Whitacre's talent and magnetism, "Whitacre is seen in the musical world as almost a Pied Piper figure, luring high school choir singers as well as world famous opera stars into the spell of his complex vocal arrays."

Legendary among choir singers are his "Whitacre chords" which are said to sweep singers into almost trancelike ecstatic states and evoke tears and gasps of joy in audiences.

Whitacre is that rare thing, a modern composer who is both popular and original.
-The Daily Telegraph, London
With no formal music training until the age of 18, he completed his first concert work, "Go, Lovely, Rose," at the age of 21. Eric went on to the Juilliard School, earned his Master of Music degree. He is passionately interested in young people learning about music through the participatory excitement of choral singing. His Virtual Chorus 2.0 will be released in April 2011. Eric Whitacre lives in Los Angeles with his wife (Grammy award-winning soprano Hila Plitmann) and their son.
