More on Thompson's Frostiana
|
Maestro Giselle Wyers leads Randall Thompson's Frostiana. Commissioned to celebrate the 200th Anniversary of the town of Amherst, Massachusetts, this work is a setting of seven poems by Robert Frost, who lived in the town for a time. These poems are united by a common thread, underscoring the importance of the many small but significant choices we make throughout life. Thompson's sensitive settings gently encourage us to take the road less traveled and to contemplate and learn from life's simple beauty. His understated style is perfectly in keeping with the emotional restraint of Frost's poetry. |
| More on Rutter's Requiem |
Maestro Sean Boulware then takes the stage to present John Rutter's Requiem. Dedicated to the memory of his father, the work is a meditation on themes of life and death. It does not adhere strictly to the conventional Catholic liturgy, but combines texts from the Requiem Mass and the Book of Common Prayer. Rutter is quoted as saying he wanted to write a Requiem that was "intimate rather than grandiose, contemplative and lyric rather than dramatic, and ultimately moving towards light rather than darkness". Though it necessarily has its dark moments, the work represents humanity's desire for comfort and peace amidst the troubles of our time. This unmistakably optimistic message is expressed through the beauty of the chosen texts and Rutter's uplifting music. |
