Grammy Award-Winning Orchestra Participates in New DCINY Program
Members of Renowned
Orpheus Chamber Orchestra To Coach Tucson Junior Strings
May 12, 2008
Later this month, the Education
Division of Distinguished Concerts International New York (DCINY) is
facilitating a new program to expose young players to the highest standards of
music professionalism.
The first musicians taking part
in the program are Tucson Junior Strings
(AZ), an orchestra training program for young string players who have played
for a minimum of one year and have not yet graduated from high school. As
chamber string ensembles, Tucson Junior Strings perform without a conductor.
The best-known conductorless ensemble
in the U.S. is Orpheus Chamber Orchestra,
a much-honored Grammy Award-winning
cultural icon known internationally for its supreme artistry and unique style
of playing.
On May 27 and 28, 2008, members
of Tucson Junior Strings and their director, Dennis Bourret, will travel to New
York to attend two days of intense workshops, rehearsals, and master classes with
members of Orpheus Chamber Orchestra.
On the first day of the program,
Tucson Junior Strings will meet members of Orpheus at Riverside Church on New
York's Upper West Side, attend a question and answer session with Orpheus
violinist and Managing Director Ronnie Bauch, and observe a rehearsal of Joan Tower's "Chamber Dance" by the
orchestra. On the following day, at Merkin Concert Hall in Manhattan, the
students will get hands-on training during a master class with two of Orpheus'
players, violist Martha Caplin and cellist Jonathan Spitz.
Distinguished Concerts
International New York plans to make such educational offerings available
during the 2008-2009 season on a frequent basis.
What People Said...
Dennis
Bourret,
Tucson Junior
Strings Director
I just wanted
to thank you and your staff for facilitating the coaching sessions with Orpheus
[Chamber Orchestra]. It was great to be able to watch them rehearse and to hear
them describe their process. It was even better to work with Martha [Caplin, violin]
and Jonathan [Spitz, cello]. Merkin Hall is possibly the best hall acoustically
that we have played in. It helped our kids to play their best.
You have been
most helpful and patient with our
negotiations for this trip. Peter was a good guide and source of information.
Your efforts made our experience worthwhile. We thank you.
