Brian Cheney, tenor, protégé
of the late Jerry Hadley, will make his solo recital debut on Saturday Evening,
March 29, at 8:30 p.m. at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall.
Along with pianist Catherine
Venable, Cheney will explore works by top classical and contemporary
composers, including Liszt, Reynaldo Hahn, and Vaughan Williams, and he will
sing a tribute to American composers, ranging from Victor Herbert to Leonard
Bernstein. Specifically, he will open his program with Liszt's "Tre Sonetti di
Petrarchi," and perform Vaughan Williams' "Songs of Travel," and Reynaldo
Hahn's "Trois Chansons." American composers represented on the program are
Victor Herbert, Curtis Tucker, Sigmund Romberg, Leonard Bernstein, Marc
Blitzstein, and Vincent Youmans.

Brian Cheney
Brian Cheney is emerging as one of the most unique
and thrilling American tenors of his generation. He has received national
acclaim for his interpretation of operatic roles such as Ferrando in Così
fan tutte, Nemorino in L'elisir d'amore, Rodolfo in La bohème,
the Duke in Rigoletto, Alfredo in La traviata, and Tom
Rakewell in The Rake's Progress. During the final years of
Jerry Hadley's life, the legendary American tenor served as a powerful and
influential mentor and friend to Brian Cheney. Mr. Cheney's oratorio experience
ranges from performances of Handel's Messiah in New York City,
Providence, and Philadelphia; to Mendelssohn's Elijah, Gounod's St.
Cecilia Mass, as well as Mozart's Requiem. He is also an accomplished
recitalist. Of a recent recital in Connecticut, the Danbury News Times said:
"What Cheney has is a wonderful gift for capturing the nuances and
emotions in songs of any language."
His upcoming engagements include his debut performance of Candide in
Tulsa, Oklahoma. A native of Michigan, he attended the Manhattan School of
Music as well as Temple University. He makes is home in Canaan, New York, with
his wife and two daughters.
Catherine
Venable
Catherine Venable has always
been a musical chameleon, with interests and skills in the worlds of
classical music, musical theater, and sacred music. In her native Tulsa,
Oklahoma, she has regularly been orchestral pianist with the Tulsa
Philharmonic Orchestra, as well as vocal soloist with the Tulsa
Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra, performing Barber's Knoxville: Summer
of 1915, and Beethoven's Ah, Perfido!. Since moving to New
York City in 2003, she has been a pianist for several Broadway shows, including
Wonderful Town, The Light in the Piazza, The Apple Tree, How the Grinch
Stole Christmas, Beauty and the Beast, and Curtains. She is. a
graduate of Northwestern University and the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music.
