DCINY Selected for
Prestigious Leadership Award
|
The Lesbian & Gay Big Apple Corps (LGBAC) of New York City has recently named Distinguished Concerts International - New York (DCINY) as recipient of a prestigious, "Profile in Leadership" Award to be presented at the organization's 30th Year Anniversary Concert called "Generations: a 30-Year Celebration," to be held at Peter Jay Sharp Theater at Peter Norton Symphony Space on November 14, 2009 at 8:00 pm. In late September, LGBAC announced the decision made by its Board of Trustees, in correspondence addressed to DCINY's General Director, Iris Derke, and Artistic Director, Jonathan Griffith, from the organization's President, B Jon Aceto. LGBAC presents the award to organizations that support the artistic and educational ventures of LGBT ensembles such as theirs. Ms. Derke and Dr. Griffith are to accept the award at Symphony Space the evening of the concert.
LGBAC's decision to honor DCINY follows a performance by the LGBAC on the DCINY concert series held at Carnegie Hall on February 15, 2009, which was made on a special invitation-only basis. As Mr. Aceto's letter explained "That chance to debut our Symphonic Band at such a distinguished venue will remain a highlight experience for long into the future and one which will be a challenge to surpass."

Organizations Aligned in
Common Mission to Support Diversity and Musical Excellence
|
In response to the honor, General Director, Iris Derke remarked "It is truly an honor for DCINY to be selected for this award by the LGBAC, and to be a part of their amazing 30-year celebration. The Corps is comprised of major musical talent, and we are very proud to have selected, and facilitated their symphonic band's Carnegie debut last February. LGBAC is an organization that embraces diversity and is committed to making beautiful music that is accessible for everyone. These align well with DCINY's own mission, rooted in the motto ‘The Art of Performance - The Power of Education'."

| Background of LGBAC |
Founded in 1979, the Lesbian & Gay Big Apple Corps Symphonic Band stands today as one of the most diverse and talented community ensembles in New York City. Its 70-person symphonic band performs several concerts each year, delighting audiences with a mix of original works for band, classical transcriptions, show-tunes, popular favorites, and more. In February, the organization made its acclaimed ensemble debut in concert at Carnegie Hall, and its award-winning marching band has thrilled millions in parades and festivals from coast to coast. As a member of the Lesbian and Gay Band Association, the LGBAC had the distinct honor of marching in President Barack Obama's inaugural parade, the first LGBT organization ever to receive such an invitation.
