DCINY Auditions Soloists for 2011 and 2012 Seasons
In early October, close to 100 singers from all over the United States and Canada auditioned to be considered for soloist positions for the DCINY 2011 and 2012 concert seasons. Jonathan Griffith, Artistic Director & Principal Conductor of DCINY, states, "I was extremely impressed with the overall high quality of musicians, many of whom have performed with the New York Metropolitan Opera, the New York City Opera, and the Chicago Lyric Opera, as well as major orchestras across the country. I know our audiences will be in for a treat in the coming season with outstanding performers onstage. I suggest marking concert dates in your calendar now."

Broadway in NYC
While the opportunity of performing in historical and amazing venues like Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts is the main focus for musicians performing on the DCINY Series, performance is not the sole reason DCINY's artists are drawn to New York City. Along with the city's amazing sights, spectacular restaurants and world-class museums are, of course, the fantastic Broadway musicals and plays. In addition to Broadway's long running hits including Wicked, Chicago and Phantom of the Opera, there are always new and inventive productions each season. Opening on Broadway during the upcoming DCINY season are Spiderman: Turn off the Dark, and Wonderland, a musical sequel to Lewis Carol's Alice in Wonderland. For groups and individuals traveling to New York, it's also a great idea to investigate some of the off-Broadway productions to see some cutting edge theater before it moves to the Broadway stage (or disappears forever)! Check out Theatermania and Broadway.com for what is playing currently, what is opening soon, and what shows are the next big thing!

Concert Premieres
Concert series across the country and around the globe are anchored by standards of the choral-orchestra repertoire - Brahms' Requiem, Orff's Carmina Burana, Faure's Requiem, etc. - with a few newer works included for good measure along with an occasional premiere. The DCINY Concert Series purposefully includes new works; the 2011 Season is certainly no exception:
- Karl Jenkins: Gloria (United States Premiere), with the composer in residence. Tickets are on sale now!
- Will Todd: Mass in Blue (New York City Premiere)
- Mark Hayes: The American Spirit (World Premiere), conducted by the composer
- Vijay Singh: Mass with Orchestra (World Premiere), with the composer in residence
- Tim Powell: Incarnatio Mysteria (World Premiere), conducted by the composer
Now auditioning ensembles of distinction!

The Entrepreneurial Conductor
On the heels of "The Entrepreneurial Conductor" presented by Jonathan Griffith at the Association of British Choral Director’s Conference in Scotland in August, Dr. Griffith presented this informational lecture again in September at the University of Stellenbosch, a short distance from Cape Town, South Africa and also at the Institute for Arts Management and Development at North-West University in Potchefstroom, South Africa (pictured). The Entrepreneurial Conductor is a nuts and bolts approach to the organization of choirs and the success of their conductors. Topics presented and discussed in the lecture/workshop included fundraising, programming, marketing, public-relations, and recruitment. Attendees learned how to sell themselves, their music, their program and their choir to students, singers, administration and the community.
Said Colette Loots,
Choir Manager of Colla Voce Youth Choir,
"The Workshop in Potchefstroom was certainly a wonderful learning experience for each one of us from Vereeniging in Gauteng who attended. Your presentation was done with such humbleness, honesty and enthusiasm which left us with such appreciation for you as a person -- thank you! You and the contents of the workshop were the topic of conversation during our trip home -- we could just not stop talking and brainstorming about fundraising ideas."
