Samus Haddad, Meet the DCINY Production Staff

DCINY's Production Staff are vital to running the performances backstage, but they also are achieving in the musical world as performers as well. Samus Haddad has just accepted a role in the Nashville Opera Company! While we are sad to see him leave DCINY, we are extremely proud of his accomplishments.

Samus Haddad, a baritone and New York native, is thrilled to be taking part in Nashville Opera's production of La Fanciulla del West, and participating in outreach and donor events during their winter season. Samus made his professional operatic debut when, as the understudy apprentice artist, he was granted the opportunity to interpret the role of Elder Bat McLean in Carlisle Floyd's Susannah for Central City Opera, as well as Dr. Malatesta in Donizetti’s Don Pasquale, Golaud in Debussy’s Pelléas and Mélisande, and the title role in Mozart’s Don Giovanni, all performed with UW-Madison Opera. He is currently working on a production of the late Lee Hoiby's This is the Rill Speaking, a one-act opera based on the Lanford Wilson play of the same title. This production will be mounted by Chelsea Opera June 9th-11th.

Samus graduated Summa Cum Laude from the Eastman School of Music and the University of Rochester with degrees in Vocal Performance, Japanese, and Econometrics in May of 2005. He was honored with a Performer’s Certificate from the Eastman School at the time of his graduation. In 2008, he completed his graduate work in opera performance at UW-Madison under the tutelage of renowned baritone Paul Rowe, and was a recipient of the Paul Collins Distinguished Graduate Fellowship Award. Before returning to NYC, he worked as an adjunct professor of voice at St. Norbert College in De Pere, Wisconsin. In addition to his vocal studies, Samus is an avid chef and coffee aficionado, and has a persistent interest in kinesthetics and alternative medicine.

ManualAirs Choir

Indianapolis choir receives overwhelming community support

Music teacher Spencer Lloyd works in a struggling school located in a low-income area of Indianapolis, IN. The students have immense talent and Mr. Lloyd seeks out performance opportunities for the kids while striving to instill a strong sense of community and work ethic. A local newspaper reporter caught wind of the choir's invitation to sing at Carnegie Hall with composer Greg Gilpin and wrote about it. The article mentioned that the singers would need community support to make a performance at the legendary concert hall a reality. Just one week after the article ran, the choir received donations of TWICE as much money needed for the choir to travel to New York! Not only will the ManualAirs sing at Carnegie Hall, but the extra funds will support the music program's future including the creation of a digital piano lab.

The two IndyStar articles can be read online:

May 8, 2011 - "Manual choir needs more than practice to get to Carnegie Hall"
May 15, 2011 - "Choir needed $30,000; it got so much more"

WTHR-TV - "Manual singers bound for Carnegie Hall, thanks to donors"

The Moment We've All Been Waiting for

by Johanna Kodlick, Director of Artistic Operations

My desk is filled with papers, the phone is ringing, a steady flow of emails are entering my inbox, and a meeting has just been scheduled -- just another day at the office. The "daily grind" can sometimes get to us all. But then, I attend a DCINY concert. The goal we've all -- the DCINY team, performers, and ensemble directors -- have been working towards for a year is here, and it's all worth it. It’s so rewarding to see a DCINY concert come to fruition after all of the hard work and passion that goes into it. After so many emails and phone calls, finally getting to meet the directors and performers is such a great feeling. It’s as though we already know each other so well, although we are just shaking hands for the first time as they arrive in NYC.

And so here I am, the night of the concert. I hand the usher my ticket and take my seat. This guest conductor is actually much taller than he seemed in his picture...what lovely control of the chorus and the orchestra he has. The acoustics in here are awesome. All of the performers look so joyous, so fulfilled, so into it. This ROCKS! This, my friends is what it’s all about. This is why we work so hard and what keeps us coming back for more. Music. This is the moment we’ve all been waiting for.

Happy Birthday, Carnegie Hall!

Carnegie Hall celebrated its 120th anniversary on May 5th, 2011. From its origins as a showpiece of industrialist Andrew Carnegie's philanthropy to its status now as one of the finest concert venues, the hall is a mecca for classical, jazz and pop artists (and fans) from all over the world. On that night, the Empire State Building lit up in "Carnegie Hall red" to celebrate the 120th anniversary. Cheers to 120 years of great music-making at Carnegie Hall!

My First Week at DCINY

by Laura Toppi, Intern

Moving to New York and starting to work for DCINY has been a whirlwind adventure. Although I have only been here one week, I already know this company is a great fit and I look forward to work every day. There is so much more that goes into working for DCINY than one would imagine. Whether I am researching new choirs, delivering packages, or working backstage at the concerts, I feel like I am always doing a job that is an integral part in keeping the company running smoothly. It has been great to able to experience the different aspects of DCINY, and I never have to worry about sitting around with nothing to do! Each member of the team has gone out of their way to include me, and the atmosphere at work is always fun and upbeat. It is really great to work in an environment where I don't feel like just the intern, but an integral part of the team. I have learned so much about DCINY in just one week, and I cannot wait to expand my knowledge of the company and field even further.
