Greetings Iris, Jonathan and Tim--

I am writing to express my heartfelt appreciation to all of you for including the Greater NYC Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure in such a spectacular evening! The Sing for the Cure production was flawless and the singing and narration were just outstanding! Kudos to all of you!

I always knew the evening would be wonderful but I didn't anticipate how impactful it would be to me both personally and professionally! While every selection was beautiful, "One Voice" truly captured my heart and provided me with strong affirmation that despite the challenges we face daily, the work we are doing individually and collectively to make a difference in the lives of others is so vitally important.

Many thanks to each of you for your creative spirits and for using your beautiful voices and talents to make a difference in the lives of so many, including me!

With my warmest regards and appreciation,

Dara P. Richardson-Heron, MD

It is hard to put into words the joy and hope that echoed through Carnegie Hall during the "Heartsongs/Sing for the Cure" concert. To hear young voices sharing in song Mattie Stepanek's message of peace was one of the most rewarding moments of my life. To experience the journey that is "Sing for the Cure" is nothing short of life-changing. This gathering of caring musicians was more than a concert... it was a celebration of life!

Eric Whitacre's Virtual Choir

Eric Whitacre's Virtual Choir project has been such an incredible success with submissions worldwide - a true testament to the power of the internet! DCINY could not be more proud that this project is intertwined with their presentation of Mr. Whitacre's New York Premiere of Paradise Lost - Shadows and Wings; the Virtual Choir scholarship winners were awarded the opportunity to perform on this production on June 15, 2010 at Carnegie Hall. With the growth of Mr. Whitacre's popularity as a composer, he has caught the attention of many, so much so that he had the honor of being interviewed about his unique Virtual Choir idea on CNN's "World Report" on Wednesday, May 19, 2010. DCINY sends heartfelt congratulations to Mr. Whitacre for having his music exposed on such an esteemed forum! Visit the CNN video archives to hear the interview.

Mr. Whitacre speaks in his own words about his virtual choir to CBC's Spark, a combined blog, radio show and podcast in Canada. He tells the story of where the idea for the choir came from and how it was made into reality. The broadcast captured his excitement and awe about this innovative project, and conveyed his amazement at how much could be communicated through each individual performance. A very private event in each singer's home skillfully came together to showcase his wonderful work, Lux Aurumque. The audio from the show, as well as a link to the virtual choir itself, may be found on the Spark blog.

On Monday, June 7, 2010, Mr. Whitacre spoke with WNYC's Soundcheck about the virtual choir as well as DCINY's upcoming production of Whitacre's Paradise Lost. To listen, visit WNYC's website.

Inaugural Educational Residency a Success

DCINY's motto is "The Art of Performance - The Power of Education," and as a part of our focus on education, we have instituted a Rehearsal/Concert Audit program. The program gives choral and instrumental programs a preview of a performance residency as an educational and inspirational tool.

On April 17, 2010, members of the Summit Christian Academy and their director Mr. Adam Schwamb audited rehearsals for the concert with Eric Whitacre. During their time they:

  • Observed a choral/piano rehearsal, following along in the scores, taking notes, and learning from guest conductor Eric Whitacre
  • Toured Carnegie Hall and went backstage
  • Watched the dress rehearsal and met Eric Whitacre
  • Attended the concert performance

Said Mr. Schwamb of the experience, "DCINY's rehearsal audit program was an excellent opportunity for my students. The audit program afforded my students the chance to witness the process of a concert from rehearsal to concert stage and gave them a greater appreciation and understanding of how music is produced. Our school will definitely be participating in this program again."

Noelle Springer, DCINY Intern

by Noelle Springer

Before becoming an intern at DCINY, I had performed Mozart's "Requiem" with DCINY two summers past. As an undergraduate, I am still in the process of learning exactly what I want to do when I graduate, and I thought what better way than by becoming an intern at DCINY. Already, this experience has provided me knowledge in a plethora of areas: social networking, concert promotion, website design, and much more. This internship has shown me different aspects of a concert production company and has really pushed me to work in the music industry after graduation. It has also been extremely interesting to see the other side of the performances and everything that goes into making the concerts run as smoothly as they do. I am beyond thrilled to be a part of DCINY and cannot wait for the coming months.

Lincoln Center Renovation Nears Completion

After an over $1.2 billion effort, the years of renovation at New York City's Lincoln Center of the Performing Arts are finally nearing completion. Originally built as one of the largest urban renewal projects in New York City history, Lincoln Center has now opened several new public spaces, including an elevated lawn and a complete renovation of the signature fountain located in the courtyard between Avery Fisher Hall, the Metropolitan Opera and the State Theater. DCINY is very excited to present in these beautifully renovated spaces, including a fully remodeled Alice Tully Hall. Please look at some of the links below and see the remodeling for yourself!

My First Weeks at DCINY

by Kyrstan Langer, DCINY Intern

The first day I came to work at DCINY, I was so nervous, I waited outside the door for ten minutes. Finally, I walked into to the office and into my life for the next three months. The first week I was here, I tried to soak up everything I could. I had a little notebook and was writing everything down as fast as I could. My second week I was on my own. I didn't have anyone holding my hand, making sure I did everything right. Sure, I made a few mistakes, but I also learned a lot. My first concert with DCINY was so exciting. I listened to the beautiful choirs practice, and the night of the concert was so thrilling. I was actually backstage in Carnegie Hall helping to make a concert possible for all the people in the audience. At that moment, I knew the things I have been learning were paying off. Now, in this third week, I am beginning to feel more comfortable, still learning but also able to figure some things out for myself. It's going to be a great summer.

Created in 1998, the GRAMMY Signature Schools program--presented by the Gibson Foundation with support from the Ford Motor Company Fund--recognizes top U.S. public high schools that are making an outstanding commitment to music education. Douglas Anderson--located in Jacksonville, Florida--received a gorgeous custom award and a grant of $5000.
