The Big Show

by Arupa Gopal, Production Associate

After almost a year of working for DCINY, I had only assisted with a few concerts on occasion, although I had become increasingly interested in how these big events came together. This spring, I became a member of the core team who puts our performances together. Starting in May, I stepped out from behind the computer and experienced concert production at several of New York City's most famous venues.

Needless to say, there was much to learn and little time. With the help of the rest of the production staff, I was quickly introduced to the ins and outs of wrangling hundreds of eager participants, communicating with venue staff (both concert and reception sites), and coordinating with the rest of the DCINY staff to create an enjoyable experience for both the performers and the audience members. By the end of the season, I had helped to put together memorable performances, both large and small, in Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and Jazz at Lincoln Center. From an inspirational evening dedicated to the human spirit, a musical theatre production by one of classical music's brightest stars (Eric Whitacre), to an energetic tale of one people's spiritual journey, each event was more educational than the last.

Although I have had previous experiences with organizing concerts of varying sizes and types, this spring has been the most fulfilling so far. I look forward to what the coming months will reveal for an exciting 2011 season!

Composer Eric Whitacre Signs "Exclusive, Long-term Recording Contract"

Composer Eric Whitacre, a great friend of DCINY, has signed a recording contract with Decca. His debut album for the label, "Light & Gold," will be recorded in August with the release set for October 18. Dickon Stainer, managing director of Decca, said "Eric Whitacre writes music of luminous beauty. Decca shares his vision to reinvent classical music for a new digital generation." DCINY wants to congratulate Eric in this exciting new venture.

DCINY in the Press

DCINY wrapped up the 2010 season with a bang. We received several notable mentions from the press this past month, including two wonderful reviews from The New York Times and The Epoch Times (PDF 371K) on the New York Premiere of Eric Whitacre's Paradise Lost: Shadows and Wings. Our last concert of the season, Psalms and Songs, was listed in TimeOut New York. Last but not least, The Boston Globe wrote a nice article about one of our participating choirs, the Early Bird Singers, who performed in Avery Fisher Hall on June 27th.

Eric Whitacre's "Paradise Lost: Shadows and Wings" (Concert Version) Receives Its New York Premiere

On Tuesday, July 15th, people from around the world came to experience the New York Premiere of Eric Whitacre’s “Paradise Lost: Shadows and Wings” (concert version) and were not disappointed. This dramatic choral performance, conducted and composed by Whitacre, consisted of over 400 performers and featured Grammy-winning soprano Hila Plitmann, cellist Fang Fang Xu, taiko drummers On Ensemble, DJ Greg Chun, narrator David Norona, and six other soloists. “The theater echoed with a sound unlike any other, as riveting and heart-stopping as an epic movie soundtrack,” wrote Annie Wu for the Epoch Times. The concert was an emotional rollercoaster, bringing the audience from tears to laughter and finally to their feet for two standing ovations.
