The "Vance George" iris

The "Vance George" Iris

Vance George will be a Guest Conductor for DCINY’s Love, Lust, and Light - A Valentine’s Day Concert on February 14th, 2010, at Carnegie Hall. He will be conducting the infamous Carmina Burana by Carl Orff. His knowledge and expertise of large choral-orchestral works is superior. Says composer Conrad Susa, "Vance creates a sonority, a kind of sonic thumb-print for each performance."

As he has wowed audiences all over the world with the high-quality performances he leads, he also has led one of the finest symphony choruses in the world. Because of his 23 years of dedication as the director of the San Francisco Symphony Chorus and the reputation he has helped them achieve, a new hybrid of the iris flower is being named after him. The "Vance George" iris will be presented to him by Gordon Jensen during his performance residency with DCINY for the 02/14/10 concert.

Changes at Lincoln Center Campus

Many of the DCINY concerts are held each season on the vibrant Lincoln Center campus. Home to 12 resident organizations, the campus is undergoing a transformation. Exterior changes include an updated fountain, shaded grove on the north plaza and extensive renovation to Alice Tully Hall. A related project includes the new David Rubenstein Atrium at Lincoln Center, located between Broadway and Columbus Avenue and West 62nd and 63rd Streets. This is a public space with an information center, cafe, free weekly concerts and day-of discount tickets to events on the campus.

An Exclusive Interview with Karl Jenkins

Americymru, a Welsh Social Network, conducted an exclusive interview with Welsh composer, Karl Jenkins last month. Dr. Jenkins is one of the most prolific, popular and performed composers in the world today. The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace alone has been performed over 700 times in 20 different countries since the CD was released, while his recorded output has resulted in 17 gold and platinum disc awards. DCINY is looking forward to Dr. Jenkins’ return to Carnegie Hall next month. He will be conducting a U.S. Premier of his work, Concerto for Euphonium & Orchestra, featuring soloist David Childs; as well as selections from Sacred Songs. DCINY teamed up with Americymru with a special ticket giveaway contest to the Music Masters of Wales’ concert on March 6.

Meet DCINY: Johanna Kodick, Director of Artistic Operations

The 2010 DCINY concert season is off to a wonderful start. This is the company’s third concert season, and I am very proud to say that I have been here from the beginning, watching as our concert season grows more successful with each year.

Looking around to the packed house and hearing the beautiful performances on both January 18th and 19th caused me to reflect on the moments of our first days as a company when we were working out of one small office on 57th street. We went into the first season with fingers crossed that all would go well....and it did. With the 2009 season it went even better, and the trend continues in 2010. Working with DCINY continues to be such a gratifying experience. With each passing season "the machine" becomes more and more well-greased, and our returning clients are proof that we continue to move in the right direction. I love being along for the ride!
