Karl Jenkins' Gloria and Te Deum
On
August 10, 2010, Karl Jenkins released a new album through EMI
Classics. The album includes his recent composition, Gloria, and his Te
Deum, featuring the composer conducting the National Youth Chorus of
Great Britain and the London Symphony Orchestra, with soloist Hayley
Westenra.
Gloria received its World Premiere on July 11, 2010, at the Royal
Albert Hall in London. The work is in five movements and takes its main
text from the Latin hymn of praise to God from the traditional mass.
DCINY will stage the US Premiere of Gloria on Monday, January 17, 2011, paired with Jenkins' Stabat Mater.
The second piece on the album, Te Deum, was composed in 2008 and
is an early Christian Latin text praising God. After its premiere in
Liverpool, the Liverpool Echo described it as "a joyous, theatrical
piece of music."

An Update from the Program Development Department
by Phil Bravo and Jeffery Thyer
It has been a busy spring and summer for the DCINY Program Development team as we work towards the upcoming 2011 and 2012
concert series. There has been an exciting amount of interest by
talented instrumental and choral ensembles from around the country, and
we have received a fantastic number of wonderful audition recordings.
It's been great to have the opportunity in June and July to meet with
directors at the Chorus America conference in down south in Atlanta, and
then to head down to the Lone Star State for the Texas Choral Directors
Association and Texas Orchestra Directors Association conferences in
San Antonio. After a busy month, we're settled back home in New York
and looking forward to continuing to build momentum towards our January
17th opening performance and the rest of the season!

Nicole Cotton's Lemon Ice Box Pie
The production department has finally had a chance to catch up on
some rest! After a fabulous and busy season as Production Coordinator, I
was able to relax back in my native state of Arkansas. That's right,
good ole summer in the south! I had a chance to sleep, lounge around on
the boat, and catch some great live music back home. One of the things
I enjoyed the most, besides family and friends, was the food. I ate as
much fried chicken, fried okra, homegrown fresh tomatoes, and sweet tea
as I could stomach! But I have to say one of my favorite desserts,
that I had not had in awhile, was lemon ice box pie. If you have not
had it, you must try it! That's why I've decided to bring a taste of
home back and share it with all of you.
Lemon Ice Box Pie
Adapted from Paula Deen's Best Desserts 2010 Magazine
Makes one 9-inch pie (8 to 10 servings)
Crust:
1 3/4 cups crushed vanilla wafers (approx. 55 cookies)
1/4 cup sugar
6 tablespoons butter, melted
Filling:
2 (14oz) cans sweetened condensed milk
2 large eggs
2 large egg yolks
1 teaspoon lemon zest (from 1 lemon)
1/2 cup fresh lemon juice (from 2 lemons)
1/4 cup sour cream
- Preheat oven to 350F.
- In a small bowl, combine cookie
crumbs, sugar, and melted butter, stirring until crumbs are moistened.
Press mixture into the bottom and up the sides of a 9-inch pie plate;
set aside.
- In a large bowl, whisk together,
sweetened condensed milk, eggs, and egg yolks until smooth. Add in lemon
zest and juice, whisking until smooth. Whisk in sour cream. Pour
mixture into prepared crust and bake for 25 to 30 minutes, or until
center of pie is set. Let cool for 30 minutes. Cover and chill for at
least 4 hours, up to 3 days. Top with whipped cream when serving.
Great for a hot day!
