Favorite Chicago hot spots:

Boston Blackies, The Midwest Clinic Exhibit Area, the lobby of the Palmer House, The Gage, Webber Grill, The Berghoff, Giordano's, Carsons, Publican, the lobby of the Chicago Hilton, The Emerald Loop Bar & Grill, Millers Pub, Buddy Guy's Legends, Kitty O'Sheas

Most significant person met at Midwest:

Sammy Nestico, Eric Whitacre, Vic Firth, Col. Bourgois (US Marine Band), Fred Fennell, Phillip Smith,Tim Lauztenheiser, Vaclav Nelhybel, James Curnow, Paula Crider, Frederick Hemke, Matt Conaway (WHS alumni who is now composing for Barnhouse), James Swearingen, David Effron, Randy Gilmore from Marching Show Concepts, John Bourgeois, H. Robert Reynolds

Favorite memory:

  • Just watching the people, as we all are in the profession, is amazing.
  • We enjoy everything from the Navy pier to the little corner bakeries in Chicago, but hearing the Eastman Wind Ensemble is without a doubt my favorite experience since I've been attending the Midwest Clinic. Lots of fun times, but this was amazing!!
  • Driving up to Midwest in 1988 in a University of Southern Mississippi station wagon with 6 other music majors to attend Midwest. We all piled into one room at the Essex Inn, and had a grand time on a tiny amount of money.
  • When Allan Vizzutti performed his solo composition in the Grand Ballroom of the Hilton and he played a cadenza that had everyone's jaw in their laps. He stopped and said, "Now that I have your attention" and then proceeded to continue his amazing cadenza before finally finishing the composition to a standing ovation.
  • As a trumpet player in a regional orchestra, being at the CSO Brass concert and sitting directly above the box seat occupied by Bud Herseth. I think I heard him buzzing his mouthpiece before the concert. What a great man he is!!
  • Hanging out with Synergy Brass
  • A session with Dr. Tim [Lauztenheiser] where he had the whole group singing Silent Night and we went into a great harmony with just a word
  • Seeing my friends' groups perform
  • Having a conversation with the Marsalis family
  • Hearing the army herald trumpets
  • Hearing the Chicago Symphony Orchestra LIVE for the very first time in my life
  • Listening to Canadian Brass in the lobby of the Hilton - impromptu concert
  • Watching the Canadian Brass get kicked out of the main lobby at the Hilton because the directors were making it to difficult for the other guests. Please who else is in the Hilton during midwest!
  • The final year at the Hilton. It was very sad to leave, but it was exciting to anticipate McCormick Place.
  • "No plate like chrome for the Hollandaise" dentist joke told by jazz trumpet soloist
