In addition to the concert offerings provided by DCINY, an important
element of our philosophy is that of education. Whether it be for a
school, church or community organization, chorus, band wind ensemble,
or orchestra, we are dedicated to enhancing the concert experience
through these educational programs.
Rehearsal Visits
Depending upon the size and make up of a visiting ensemble, DCINY will
make every effort to have a visiting conductor work with the ensemble
prior to their appearance in New York City. We also provide rehearsal
notes and performance guidelines to assist the group in their
preparation of the music to be performed.
Investments in Excellence
For ensembles that do not initially meet the quality standards required
for a performance on the DCINY concert series, DCINY will provide, when
requested, names of suitable professionals and clinicians within the
geographical proximity of the ensemble to assist the ensemble in
reaching the required performance standard. For those approved expenses
incurred by the ensemble for concert preparation, DCINY will make a
contribution to the organization of up to 2% of the total cost of the
ensemble’s concert payment (maximum of $500) for participation in a
DCINY performance. Concert participation must take place within the
season agreed upon by ensemble and DCINY for the incurred expenses and
must be approved in writing with DCINY in advance of the scheduled
clinics.
Conductor's Mentoring Program
For emerging guest conductors who will be making their New York City
conducting debut, a personal one-on-one session with Dr. Jonathan
Griffith or another leading professional in the field prior to the
conductor's appearance with emphasis on orchestra preparation, soloists
preparation, economy of rehearsal time, etc. Arrangements will be made
on an individual basis with each conductor.
Instrumental Series Study and Feedback Recordings
Programmed instrumental ensembles will be asked to submit a recording
of their concert repertoire 60 days prior to their appearance date.
This recording is made to assist in preparation; feedback and study
notes will be relayed back to the conductor and ensemble from DCINY's
artistic staff to assure efficient and rewarding final preparations for
your concert.
Special Programs
Rehearsal/Concert Audit
Distinguished Concerts International New York's Rehearsal/Concert
Audit program gives choral and instrumental programs a preview of a
performance residency as an educational and inspirational tool. This
educational residency will directly aid and support an organization in
preparation for an audition and a New York concert performance in a
major venue. Through education, we offer the opportunity to grow and
further the artistic expression of everyone involved. The program
includes admission to selected rehearsals, opportunities to meet and
greet with the guest conductor/clinician, Q&A with members of the
DCINY production staff for insight to the world of concert production,
a ticket to the concert performance, and more. Those interested in
learning more should contact the DCINY staff.
Sample Rehearsal/Concert Audit:
- Observe a choral/piano rehearsal - follow along in scores, take notes, learn from guest conductor
- Tour the concert venue - go backstage and learn about the history of the hall and its performers
- Meet & greet with the guest conductor and members of the DCINY team
- Watch the dress rehearsal
- Attend the concert performance
Spotlight: Summit Christian Academy
DCINY welcomed Summit Christian Academy for a Rehearsal/Concert Audit at Carnegie Hall on April 17, 2010.
Educators and students shared their experience in rehearsal, backstage, and at the concert:
"DCINY's rehearsal audit program was an excellent opportunity for my
students. The audit program afforded my students the chance to witness
the process of a concert from rehearsal to concert stage and gave them
a greater appreciation and understanding of how music is produced. Our
school will definitely be participating in this program again." -
Mr. Adam Schwamb, Music Director
"The rehearsal featuring Eric Whitacre was very insightful. By sitting
through the rehearsal, I gained much knowledge and truly realized the
mechanics of what goes on before the actual performance." - Derek Bohn,
11th Grade
"This opportunity allowed our students to see into a world (and
possible career) in the music world. By allowing our students to view
the rehearsals and concert, they were able to see quality talent
without being intimidated. The experience has energized them to
excellence." - Mr. Tim Connor, Headmaster
"The time that our students spent with DCINY was very beneficial. The
value of watching a composer conduct his own music was unparalleled,
and the students were able to experience the performance process from
start to finish. DCINY's staff was very gracious and professional
during our visit. They gave us a wonderful experience and left us eager
to return." - Mrs. Kara Minor, English Department Chair
Spotlight: Orpheus Chamber Orchestra
On May 27 and 28, 2008, members
of Tucson Junior Strings participated in workshops, rehearsals, and master classes with
members of Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, a much-honored Grammy Award-winning
conductorless ensemble and cultural icon.
