Artist Series Spotlight: David Templeton and Thomas Florio
Through our Distinguished Concerts Artist Series, DCINY showcases soloists and ensembles of excellence in intimate venues such as Carnegie Hall's Weill Recital Hall.
In October 2011, we will feature two vibrant soloists:
Templeton's instrumental concert will include new compositions from his latest CD, Radiance, while Florio will perform a program featuring the many styles of 20th century tonal composition.
Immersed from a very young age in the world of classical music, David Templeton believes that "passionate classical piano plays an integral part in expressing and releasing thoughts and feelings of beauty and romance today as it did in the times of Mozart and Beethoven." The new recording, "Radiance," is a unique mix of classically-flavored solo piano and guitar compositions. Tracks such as "Once on Blueberry Lake," "My Red Bike," and "Under the Willow Tree" are elegant and sophisticated, with a dash of blues. Listen to these tracks
Says Templeton, "I hope my original piano compositions as well as my guitar music will evoke feelings of passion and beauty from that classical era when you hear them."
Thomas Florio -- winner of the NATSAA 2010 41st Artist Awards -- has created an eclectic program exploring the many styles of 20th century tonal composition. The works range from pieces composed within a folk idiom by Enrique Granados to the staunchly anti-modernist, late Romantic songs of Hans Pfitzner; from the semi-comedic Shakespeare settings by Gerald Finzi to Benjamin Britten's deceptively peaceful depiction of the moment preceding terror. The program spans almost the entire century, including pieces by living composer Edwin Penhorwood.
Says Florio, "I chose to focus on tonal music and avoid serialism to keep the program accessible to a broad audience. Everyone will find something to enjoy here!"

Music to Heal and Honor the Lost: DCINY's 9/11 Concert of Commemoration
DCINY was honored to pay tribute to the victims of 9/11 with A Concert of Commemoration, performed at Avery Fisher Hall, Lincoln Center, on the tenth anniversary of the attack. Acclaimed composer Karl Jenkins conducted "The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace," his meditation on armed conflict and peace, while René Clausen conducted his work "Memorial," which he composed in the aftermath of the tragic event. Acclaimed soprano Jessye Norman acted as narrator.
New York Concert Review called the performance "One of the most extraordinary concerts of the last few years," while the Epoch Times wrote, "One truly felt the astounding power of music to heal and console."
In tandem with A Concert of Commemoration, DCINY joined several partners to create Global Sing for Peace, an invitation to choirs around the world to join in a message of healing and hope by programming Jenkins' or Clausen's work in their own concerts. Visit the Global Sing for Peace website to see a list of the many participants, who spanned the globe from the U.S. to Venezuela to South Africa.
