Early in 2002 the then Executive Director of ACDA, Gene Brooks, contacted Rene with an invitation to compose the Raymond W. Brock Memorial Commission to be premiered at the ACDA national convention in New York City in March of 2003. As it was the first national convention following the events of 9/11/01 and was to be convened in New York City, one of the topics of conversation included the possibility of composing a work which might in some way be based on the events of that day, and indeed honor the victims of those tragedies.

The ultimate result of that conversation was a composition for chorus, orchestra, and baritone solo entitled Memorial, which debuted with Clausen condcting The Concordia Choir and Orchestra at Lincoln Center and Riverside Church. The collective national feelings about 9/11/01 were still quite visceral at that time, and both the drama and the search for healing found a voice in these performances.

With the sponsorship of DCINY productions in New York City, Clausen conduct a commemorative concert featuring the performance of Memorial at Lincoln Center in New York City on September 11, 2011.

Clausen hopes to gather a national chorus for this occasion who would be willing and anxious to come to New York City and perform this work with professional orchestra and soloist. Roger Dean Publishing Company, the publisher of Memorial, is preparing a special edition of the score for this occasion. For more information click here.
