Event Date:
May 31st, 2009
Event Details:

The West Windsor-Plainsboro High School South Symphonic Band, of New Jersey, directed by Scott Collins and Anthony Pappalardo, will be performing at Stern Auditorium/Perelman Stage at Carnegie Hall, on May 31, at 8:30 PM. As part of DCINY's "Excellence in Education" Series, this elite ensemble will feature favorites such as Selections from Les Miserables, Stars and Stripes Forever, and A Festival Prelude, among others. The group will be joined by the Edison High School Wind Ensemble, also of New Jersey, directed by Tim Benge, as well as the Metropolitan Atlanta Youth Wind Ensemble, under the direction of Dr. Robert J. Ambrose. These groups will be performing works by George Gershwin, Percy Grainger, Leonard Bernstein, Morton Gould, Steven Bryant, and Donald Grantham to round the program.

The West Windsor-Plainsboro High School South Symphonic Band, recognized for musical excellence, is comprised of students in grades 9-12. Many individual players have participated in Regional, All-State, and All Eastern honors bands. This past year, 19 student musicians from South bands auditioned and participated in one or more of the NJMEA (New Jersey Music Educators Association) honors bands. The South band directors are indebted to the many fine music teachers in the district, band parents, and Boosters, as well as administrations and Board of Education, who continue to support music as a vital component of the high school education program.

Mr. Scott L. Collins has served as Band Director at High School South in the West Windsor-Plainsboro Regional School District since 2004. He teaches Music Theory, directs the Symphonic Concert Band, the Spring Musical Orchestra, and directed the "Pirate" Marching Band from 2004-2008. Mr. Collins has performed as a clarinetist with many ensembles in the Philadelphia area, and in 2008 conducted the Central Jersey Honors Symphonic Band.

Mr. Anthony Pappalardo has been a music educator for the past 40 years. His teaching experience includes 37 years in the West Windsor-Plainsboro Regional School District where he has served as District Music Coordinator and High School Head Music Teacher for 35 of those years. Mr. Pappalardo has performed as a trumpeter with numerous ensembles, and special honors include recognition from both Princeton University and the CNN Cable Network for excellence in teaching.
