Musical performance was well received

On May 22, the acclaimed International Wind Symphony, guest conducted by Maestros James Keene and Abel Ramirez of the University of Illinois School of Music, gave the first New York public performance of contemporary composer John Mackey's "Kingfishers Catch Fire" at Avery Fisher Hall of Lincoln Center.
Mackey's metaphoric work, themed on the colorful and shy kingfisher birds, was enthusiastically received by both audience and composer, as he was likewise in residence for this premiere.
The second portion of the program featured Maestro Dr. James L. Melton, professor of music, director of choral activities and dean for the School of Communication and the Arts at Vanguard University of Southern California, who conducted his Vanguard University Concert Choir, the Vanguard University Women's Chorus, as well as the Distinguished Concert Singers/Orchestra International, in a reflective performance of Schubert's well-known Mass No. 2 in G Major.
We at DCINY would like to congratulate Maestros Keene, Ramirez and Melton, Mr. John Mackey, as well as members of the International Wind Symphony, Vanguard University Concert Choir, Vanguard University Women's Chorus and the Distinguished Concert Singers/Orchestra International on their achievement. We look forward to inviting them to participate in future concerts on the DCINY Concert Series.
