GEHS Grads to Sing at Carnegie Hall
November 23, 2010
The Ottawa University Concert Choir will sing at New York City's famed Carnegie Hall on Monday, January 17, 2011, in Concert for Peace - Celebrating the Spirit of Martin Luther King, Jr. The choir has been invited to participate in a performance of Karl Jenkins Gloria along with four other groups: Kings Chorale of Canada, the Laramie County Community College Choir of Wyoming, the Methodist College Chapel Choir of Ireland, and the Sno-King Community Chorale of Washington. The choir will spend six days and five nights in New York City in preparation for the concert. Dr. Jonathan Griffith will be the conductor for the performance, as well as serve as the clinician for the residency.
"We are so honored to have been invited to perform at Carnegie Hall with these other outstanding organizations," said Dr. Jeff Anderson, director of the Ottawa University Concert Choir. "This is a tremendous opportunity not only for the choir members, but also for the entire Ottawa University Music department. I am confident this is only one of many music department experiences that will follow."
Founded in 1938, the Ottawa University Concert Choir is the University's premiere choral ensemble. Membership is determined by audition and is open to all students. The OU Concert Choir is called upon to sing for official University events and performs frequently in area churches and during on-campus events. The choir also tours annually during the spring semester, both nationally and internationally.
"The Ottawa University Concert Choir received this invitation because of the quality and high level of musicianship demonstrated by the singers and the exceptional recommendation given by Dr. Anderson's choral colleagues," said Griffith. "These wonderful musicians not only represent a high quality of music and education, but they also become ambassadors for the entire community."
The choir will depart for New York City on January 13, with a number of University administrators traveling with them. Choir members will also have opportunities to visit many historical and cultural venues while in New York City.
