Dr. Pearl Shangkuan is sought after as a conductor and clinician all across the United States and in Asia. She is a professor of Music at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and chorus master of the Grand Rapids Symphony, a Grammy-nominated professional orchestra. Shangkuan has her own signature choral series with earthsongs and serves as the music editor of the Calvin Choral series, published by GIA. Her choirs have performed at ACDA national, regional and state conventions and for other professional music organizations. She has conducted all-state, honor choirs and festivals in numerous states and overseas, and has taught at nationally respected programs such as the Chorus America conducting master class, the University of Michigan Choral Conducting Symposium and the Westminster Choir College Summer Session, among others. She was president of American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) Central Division and Michigan state president.

A student of pre-eminent American choral conductor and New York Philharmonic chorus master Dr. Joseph Flummerfelt, she received a Bachelor of Music in Church Music summa cum laude and Master of Music in Choral Conducting with distinction from Westminster Choir College in Princeton, New Jersey, and a Doctor of Musical Arts in Choral Conducting from Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey.
