Erie Philharmonic Chorus (PA)
The Erie Philharmonic Chorus is a volunteer organization whose unique
purpose is to provide the vocal expertise and proficiency needed to
accompany the various works of the Erie Philharmonic Orchestra. The
Chorus began its great tradition in October of 1952, singing choruses
from "La Traviata" under the direction of Fritz Mahler. In 1955, the
first 'pops' concert was performed to immense praise. The Chorus
appears several times each season with the Erie Philharmonic, and has
also given separate stand-alone concerts. Recent choral-orchestral
performances have included Orff's Carmina Burana, Verdi's Requiem, and
Haydn's Lord Nelson Mass, with Brahms' Ein Deutsches Requiem scheduled
for next year.
The Erie Philharmonic Chorus is directed by D. Jason Bishop.

Hilo Community Chorus (HI)
For several decades the Hilo Community Chorus was a part of a choral
union with the chorus of the University of Hawaii at Hilo, HI. Because
of the growth of both choruses and the limited space available for
rehearsals, they now rehearse separately but combine for performances
in December and May. In October of 2008 they performed their first solo
concert since the union--a concert of spirituals and Appalachian gospel
songs, followed in 2009 with an all-Vivaldi concert. Also, they sponsor
an annual Messiah sing-along and have performed twice with DCINY, once
at Carnegie Hall and once at Lincoln Center.
Although Tom McAlexander, director, has been associated with
choral music since early childhood and attended college on a music
scholarship, he chose another vocation and served for 34 years as a
forensic document examiner with various federal agencies. During that
time he always found time to participate in choral music in church
choirs and community choruses. For 25 years he sang with the
Metropolitan Chorus in the Washington DC area, where he was frequently
featured as tenor soloist. Shortly after retiring to Hawaii in 1994, he
became the volunteer director of a community chorus in the village of
Volcano. In 2005 he became the music director of the Hilo Community
Chorus.

interest in church music include Anglican music and liturgical forms,
congregational singing, 19th and 20th century American hymnody, and
Gregorian chant. Before coming to St. Stephen's Church, Williams held
positions at Norman United Church of Christ, St. Anselm of Canterbury
Episcopal Church and Student Center, All Souls' Episcopal Church, and

What People Said... |

Solveig Holmquist
Guest Conductor
I could feel the energy in the house, even with my back turned, and
enjoyed every minute of our concert. Time seemed to stand still, and I
truly felt transported by the music. That's the way performance should
be, but rarely is when one is in charge of so many details. I still
can't believe the three curtain calls!
Thank you, also, and especially your hardworking and
professional staff who made our stay such a pleasure. The soloists,
pianists, and percussionist were excellent, seemed to be on board from
the very first, and our time together was fun and rewarding.
Oh, and I forgot to relay an interesting incident: Following the party,
a bunch of WOU Chamber Singers went to Times Square and were walking
around at about 3:00 when a young man fell into step beside them and
said "Great performance tonight". They were surprised, of course, and
said "So you attended?" He replied that he's an usher at Carnegie
Hall, and added that our Carmina was one of the best performances he's
heard there in a very long time!
All the best in your future endeavors with DCINY.
