Garðar Cortes

cortesgard_200x200.jpgGarðar Cortes graduated as a soloist and voice teacher from the Royal Academy of Music and Watford School of Music, England, in 1968 and 1969. His principal tutor was Joyce Herman Allen. He pursued further voice studies with Lina Pagliughi in Italy and Prof. Helene Karusso in Vienna, and lieder interpretation with Prof. Dr. Erik Werba.

Garðar has played an active role in musical life in Iceland:

♦ Head of Seyðisfjörður Music College 1969-1970
♦ Founder and principal at Reykjavík Academy of Singing and Vocal Arts since 1973
♦ Founder and principal conductor of Reykjavík Symphony Orchestra since 1975
♦ Chair, Association of Mixed Choirs, since 1977
♦ Founded the Icelandic Opera 1979. Director until 2000
Tenor roles with the Icelandic Opera, National Theatre of Iceland, Iceland Symphony Orchestra etc.*
♦ Chorus master of Fóstbræður Male Choir, Kópavogur Joint Choir, Philharmonic Choir, Choir of the Reykjavík Academy of Singing, Choir of the Icelandic Opera
♦ Conductor at the Icelandic Opera, National Theatre, Iceland Symphony Orchestra, etc.

Tenor roles in opera houses and concert halls in the UK, Ireland, all the Nordic countries, the USA and South America *

Conductor and instructor at Nord-klang Nordic choir festival for the past 20 years

Orchestral conductor in Germany, Bulgaria, Romania, the Czech Republic, Nordic countries, etc.

Guest conductor of 300-person choir and orchestra in Carnegie Hall, New York.

Garðar has received awards of various kinds for his initiative and work in the musical world:

  • First recipient of the annual Brøste Optimism Award for his foundation of the Icelandic Opera in 1982
  • Awarded the Icelandic Order of the Falcon in 1990.
  • Received the VISA Culture Prize in 1999
